Frequently Asked Questions
What is the class size?
Our Two and You class is limited to seven. The 3s classes range from 8-10 and our 4s classes are 8-10 as well. In addition, we have assistants who float to help each class throughout the day.
What is the birthday cutoff?
Children turning 2, 3 or 4 by September 1 can enroll that school year. Some exceptions can be made for fall birthdays as long as the parent realizes that they will need to do another year of preschool before formal kindergarten. This is done on a case by case basis.
When is registration?
Parents register their child in January for the following school year. Class assignments are made after the April 1 tuition payment is received and teachers are contracted as of April 15 for the following year. Class assignments are the direct result of registration so in order to get your "first choice" you should contact the office administrator in January. msj@chestnutgrovechild.org
What is the philosophy of the preschool?
Chestnut Grove provides opportunities for children to develop socially, emotionally and intellectually. They are invited to explore their world and sense of self in a hands-on environment with a nurturing staff. The schedule is not rigid although the children follow certain routines so they can enjoy experiences in language arts, mathematics, science, art, music and exploration. Our goal is to guide children to love learning and create a positive self-image.
What are the experiences of your teachers?
The average teacher has been teaching for a decade and brings a variety of influences to our school. All of our teachers are certified through the Maryland State Department of Education and take annual coursework to hone their skills.
What does it mean to be NAEYC certified?
Chestnut Grove is NAEYC accredited. (National Association for the Education of Young Children). This board maintains strict standards for preschool programs in the areas of curriculum, physical plant, teacher training and materials. Each school must meet the criteria for certification before this license can be tendered.
What do I do at arrival?
Come in to the building and bring your child to their classroom. Give a quick goodbye and allow the teacher to take over. Part of school readiness is learning how to separate. If you have concerns, please know the office will call you to give a brief update.
What happens at dismissal?
Students are picked up at their cubbies. Please assist your child in getting the mail and all belongings to share at home.
Does my child need to be potty trained to attend?
Yes, all children in the 3s and 4s must be able to use the toilet independently. We do use the bathrooms at scheduled times to alleviate accidents and we will work with them on proper handwashing and good hygiene techniques after they use the bathroom.
What should my child wear to school?
Everyone must wear sneakers or rubber-soled shoes. Please do not send your child to school wearing flip-flops or Crocs. Children should be dressed to play and be self-sufficient with snaps, zippers etc.
What should I pack for lunch?
Children should bring healthy choices for lunch. The school provides milk and water or, if you prefer, you can send in a drink of your choice. Lunches are refrigerated each day, so there is no need to pack icepacks. Please do not send lunch items that require heating. Children are not allowed to share their lunch with anyone in the class as we have many children with food allergies.
Are their volunteer opportunities?
We would love parents to come in and share their special talents, read a story or help out as needed. Please contact your child's teacher directly so we can best utilize your time and talents. Additionally, we have a very active parent board which can always a helping hand.
How do I sign up for Extended Day?
Forms are available in the office. Any questions you have can be answered by contacting the office administrator msj@chestnutgrovechild.org.
What is the school safety plan?
The school is secured throughout the day. If you need to come to school, please buzz the front door and after you are identified by our security camera we will grant access to the school. Please do not prop open any of our exit doors as this compromises the safety of our children.
What is the best way to contact the school during the day?
The school office is open from 8:45a.m. to 3:30p.m. daily. The phone number is (410) 592- 9122. We can also be reached via email at hdoyle@chestnutgrovechild.org. If you get our voicemail during the day, please know we are working with your children and we will return your call at the close of the school day.
